Day 19 (September 6 – 7, 2015)
In Dallas we had some strong experiences of American culture and lifestyle but more was coming.
Our next goal was Amarillo and Cadillac Ranch & Big Texan Steak Ranch there. Both of those have already near 50 years history. We visited there 1989 but new (bit shocked) experience was now that tourism is in a real new level there.
Cadillac ranch work of art was built 1974 but we heart it has been relocated 1997 because of some building projects. When we visited first time there we had some kind of feeling that the place was not well known by tourists or for other reason it wasn’t so famous. Nowadays it’s different – it’s like a market place now – next tourism investment step could be a Cadillac ranch hotel (rooms with Cadillac view) and might be VIP entrance tickets where paints are already included. Texan Steak ranch has already a hotel where all Route 66 tourists can accommodate.
We actually believe that popularity of historic Route 66 is the reason for massive number of tourists there. So, if you had a great, original idea to drive route 66 through from Chicago to L.A. you can be sure, there are thousands of other tourists too on the road with you. But it’s guaranteed, there are not any worries to stray from the route. And it’s guaranteed there are not any difficulties to find Route 66 gift shops. And it’s guaranteed, all those motels/hotels on the route, you’ll pay route 66 ”tax”. And it’s guaranteed…… Sorry about this sarcasm ;-))
Big Texan Steak Ranch is legendary with it’s challenge. If you eat the biggest steak (72oz = 2kg) with all served sides (baked potato, shrimp cocktail, salad and bread roll) in one hour, it’s free of charge.
Anyhow… steaks we ate there were FANTASTIC. We tried our 1/4 challenge (about 500g steak) but we lost. I was thinking my stomach is big enough, but it wasn’t. At the same time one guy tried with full challenge (2kg) but he lost too. He ate ”only” 1,76kg (62oz). He received great applause and doggie bag that he had chance to continue his dinner at home.
After great dinner we still decided to jump back to the car and directed to West and New Mexico. Pedal was released in Santa Rosa where we took a room at Holiday Inn Express. It was packed about full of Route 66 travelers but 2 beds were found for us too.
If you are in Texas, there are no chance you could forget it. Texas flags and signs are everywhere.
You can not find only Cadillac ranch T-shirts… also authentic Historic Route 66 T-shirts are available.
Limousine service is available too if you are hungry and thirsty and need a lift.
Nowadays they have a hotel there too. If you eat too much steak, bed is available in a 20-40 meter by 4-wheels distance (crawl on all your fours).
Njam… do you think you could eat it all… what about in less than 5 minutes as Ms. Molly Schuyler has done?
When we arrived one challenger was enjoying his 2 kg steak. Actually he looked very sick and overloaded and his wife looked very concerned.
